Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Bullshit.
Words destroyed me.
“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”
“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”
“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.
Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.
“He’s gone.”
In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”
Liezel’s Thoughts:
Are you ready to jump on to an emotional rollercoaster? Because this is exactly what The Darkest Sunrise Duet was for me. One minute I was feeling sadness and despair, then anger, that evolved into hope, love, and lust, and eventually happiness. Yep, if that doesn’t describe one hell of an emotional rollercoaster I don’t know what else is.
The Darkest Sunrise is about a mother named Charlotte who is perpetually living in her own worst nightmare. It has been ten years since tragedy struck yet until this day she has yet to move on. Things change when she by chance she encounters a survivor named Porter Reece. Going through his own personal hell, I thought it would be the darkness, the heartbreak and the pain that connected them but when I delved further into the story it is inexplicably more than that.
As secrets are revealed I couldn’t help but feel shocked down to my very core. When the realization hit as just how connected really are, I completely lost it. I am not going into the details but I tell you this – nothing, and I mean nothing will prepare you for something like this. All I can say is that Aly Martinez is one phenomenal storyteller.
Again, I was flipping back between the ebook and the audio versions depending on what I was doing during the time of day and I have to say the audiobook is everything! Aly Martinez’ words alone will have you feeling all emotional but once you’ve heard it voiced out by Nelson Hobbs and Kasha Kensington it is transformed into something more. It was so great that even after reading it in ebook format I went back to listen to it too.
If you are looking for the next book that will cause a book hangover and not afraid to drop a tear or two, read this book. I thought it was amazing. It is definitely one of my favorite duets to date.
The Verdict:
