A secret that will bring her closer to Aleksey Fürst, a foreign, broody man who she distrusts because of his links to the troops and his rough, yet irresistible appearance. He offers Lila an alternative to her plans, a possibility that terrifies her…and tempts her in spite of herself.

With threats looming at every turn and no way to escape, Lila fears that falling in love will only lead to more heartache. The consequences of laying down her arms for Aleksey and welcoming hope might destroy more than her heart. They might force her to face the worst of her nightmares becoming a reality. Is love possible in a world that has forgotten what the human touch is?

Micah’s Thoughts:

I’m not sure what I was expecting when I started to read this book, but I sure wasn’t expecting to get what I did. BUT, not in a bad way. This book hits you in the face with its theme from the first pages and it doesn’t back down from the severity of the landscape of the world.

The story starts off with an 18-year-old girl, Lila, trying in earnest to lost her virginity before “recruitment”. We’re not sure exactly what this is at the beginning of the pages, but we know that it involves rape and we know it comes from the soldiers involved in the civil war of the country. Lila is neutral in the politics of the war but is terrified of what the genetically modified, drugged up soldiers can do when they attack people. She has witnessed it first hand when they attacked her pregnant mother. Rey is her best friend and her first choice for fulfilling the job. She wants the memory to be a good one before it is taken from her in a force-able act.

In a chance encounter that leaves her scared and curious, she meets Prince Alexsey in the river bathing. From that point on, he leaves her maddened at his actions as he helps her and her family and infuriates her with his actions.

This book broaches some really sensitive subject matter. I can see how some people might be triggered by it. It does comment on a larger, growing problem in the society-the objectification of women. In the book, men are also a subject of rape, but to a smaller degree and only when they fight against the army. Lila taking control over her sexuality is taking control of her life, in a sense. The people in her town will look down on her, but it could possibly save her from “recruitment”. It is a hard line to walk. Slut shaming is a real thing even in our society today, even with how open we are.

I would give this book 4.25 stars, overall. The book had some slow moments, but it always drew me back in with a compelling moment. I really liked the characters and the world, although it was shocking and terrifying. I would recommend this to people who are fans of dystopian romance.
