Her heart can’t be destroyed by the same person twice. At least that’s what Clara Abbot finds herself hoping when she runs into Boone Cavanaugh less than an hour after returning to Charleston.
As kids, Clara and Boone had been each other’s firsts, and no one or nothing could stand in the way of their forever. But all kids have to grow up sometime. The troubled son of the town drunk winding up with the firstborn daughter of the local royalty was a happy ending even the most imaginative of fairy tales couldn’t make believable.
Their fable came to an end as most do: tragically. Boone might have done the leaving, but it was Clara who got away and made a new life for herself in California. But after seven years of dodging her hometown, she’s only back in Charleston for seven days to celebrate her sister’s wedding. She won’t let her overbearing family or her run-in with Boone rattle her—though rattling her is obviously Boone’s primary objective.
Boone is her past and her past is behind her, a mere speck in the rearview. So why does she feel it coming back every time she looks at him? Why does she see it every time he looks back?
Just when Clara’s life can’t possibly get more complicated, the ground shifts, and she discovers just how far her family was willing to go to keep the wrong boy out of her life. Was it really Boone who left her? Or was it Clara who left him?
The truth will be hard to face. Especially when she discovers most of her life has been built on lies.
Audiobook Review by Micah, Angie, and Liezel
What did you love best about the story of The Fable of Us?
Micah: I loved a great second chance story handled well. And this is an excellent example of that. I loved the connection that Boone and Clara had, even after 7 years of separation and heartbreak. Their families only give them stress and grief, in general, and about each other.
The relationship between Boone and Clara. I loved how they had each others back with the situations that came up during the story. And how they were able to untangle their past into something manageable.
Angie: I have to agree 100% with Micah! No matter their obstacles they seemed like they were tethered together by an invisible rope. They were always there for each other once they reconnected. I love that about them. But I also found frustrating. There were so many cases of miscommunications that if they would’ve talked then everything would have been better.
Liezel: There were so many things that I loved about this book but if I was just to choose one then it would be the relationship between Clara and Boone. From the very moment they saw each other again you could practically feel their resentment, their regret and even then the longing that they still felt after all those years. With feelings that unmistakable, I knew that whatever they had in the past was extraordinary and had the potential to be even better given the chance.
What about AJ Ferraro’s performance did you like?
Micah: I loved the narrator. She did an excellent job of differentiating between the different characters enough for me that I usually had no problem knowing who was speaking. I thought she did an excellent job. This was my first ever audio book because I never thought my mind would be able to pay attention and focus. However, I had no problem focusing on the story.
Angie: I loved AJ’s voice and the way she told the story of Boone and Clara! Every character had their own unique voice and personality! When they were tired, you knew. When they were happy or excited, you knew. When they were sad or tired, you knew. I love that about AJ!! Not very many narrators read books that way and she did! I felt like I was sitting on the floor listening to my dad read me a book in his different voices and emotions for each character. She did an excellent job and I’ll be listening to more by her!
Liezel: I thought she did a fantastic job. Besides the fact that she was able to create different voices like mentioned above, her voice modulation was spot on. You knew exactly how each character was feeling at any given time. When Clara was annoyed with her family, you heard that annoyance in AJ’s voice and so forth.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Micah: I wanted to, yes. I wasn’t able no, but I really did want to. In fact, I only had 50 minutes to go and had to go inside, so I bought the ebook to finish the story at night. And THEN listened to the rest of the book just to hear how it sounded.
Angie: Yes! I hated every time I had to stop at a rest area and pee or get gas. I hated that I had to be an adult and mom and feed my child and my sister’s dogs. I just wanted to listen to this book with no interruptions but despite that I’m so happy I did!
Liezel: Absolutely. I mostly read on my way to and from work. Who is ever excited to drive to work? I was! And as the story unfolded I found myself leaving earlier than normal just so I can get those few extra minutes to listen to their story. I too had a different version of this book but opted to listen instead of reading from beginning to end because it was that good.
Would this be a book that you would recommend, in either audio or regular form?
Micah: YES! I am a huge Nicole Williams fan and I would always recommend her. Her stories are always compelling and emotional. I love her writing.
Angie: Hell yes! Like Micah, I’m a huge Nicole Williams fan and she continues to amaze me with each and every book she writes! They are all unique and not the same and I love that!
Liezel: I haven’t read all of Nicole Williams books but what I have read so far I have been utterly impressed with. Each of her stories is strikingly different and always, always, always leave a lasting impression. This is why she is now one of my must-read authors.
The Verdict:
