What was your favorite quote in this book?
Angie: I have two but let’s be honest, I almost have the whole book highlighted with quotes. So it was extremely hard to narrow down one. Lol
With my arms and legs hooked around him, I cling to the pillar of his torso. This brutal man is my home. His hell is my heaven. I’m his Ivory and he’s my darkest note.
He’s it for me. The zenith of my happiness. All roads, however, perilous and winding, lead to this man, my teacher, the music of my soul.
Liezel: I also have two. The first one would be the second quote that Angie chose and the second one is below. I thought Ivory’s statement summarized their relationship completely.
This is our secret world, and it’s more meaningful than every aspiration I’ve ever set for myself. Our relation isn’t practical or convenient. And it’s not just physical. We need each other, not because our bodies fit so well together, but because our hearts beat the same tune, for the same reason.
What was it about this book that had you so captivated?
Angie: The easier question would be what didn’t captivate me. That answer would be nothing. The whole book had me captivated from the very first sentence to the last word. Ivory’s story is so well written that you forget she is in high school and you find yourself rooting for her to find the one that saves her. She’s such a strong lead character even at times when she’s weak, she’s strong. Emeric is someone you either love or hate or you grow to love. I loved him. He’s in a lot of turmoil struggling to do what’s right and I loved reading what he was thinking. With each chapter, I loved him more.
Liezel: I’ve always had this feeling of apprehension when reading these teacher/student romances and this was the main reason that this book held me captivated. I already knew that Pam Godwin was a great writer and I needed to know how she was going to weld such a delicate story. And I would have to say that she tells one spectacular story.
Dark Notes is categorized as a dark romance, was it dark enough for you? If not, what would you have changed about it?
Angie: I think it’s more taboo than dark but taboo romances are classified as dark. There was this one scene that I don’t want to relive. *shudders* I thought for Ivory’s story it was perfect. Pam spun a tale of young 17 yr old who had a hard life growing up. Men constantly taking advantage of her. You understand what she done and why she did it. Not once did I feel creeped out reading Dark Notes. I wouldn’t change anything about it. It was perfect the way it is.
Liezel: I thought it was perfect. The dark undertones of this story certainly complemented the couple’s relationship remarkably. There were so many times that I wanted to say “Holy Shit, that’s so wrong!” but given their situation (especially hers) it felt that the badness was justified. Every single sacrifice Emeric did for Ivory was always out of vindication.
What did you think about the characters?
Angie: I loved Ivory and Emeric! Ivory is such a relatable character. She’s strong-willed and not entitled. I love that about her. I related to her on many levels. Emeric is also another strong lead and I do mean strong and well endowed. Ok that got off topic. He may be dominating but he’s gentle and understands Ivory’s needs. He gives her space when she needs it and loves her at her weakest.
Liezel: I too loved both of these characters. Don’t get me wrong, whatever Ivory was doing wasn’t 100% right but if you think about it… did she have another choice? I personally couldn’t help but admire her for her ambition. There were multiple factors in her life that were pulling her down but that didn’t deter her from going after her dream. As for Emeric… Yes, he was creepy in the beginning but when he began to show just how genuine his intentions were I completely fell in love with his character too.
Would you recommend this book?
Angie: Yes!! I’ve already started recommending it!! I love this book. It’s one of my top 5 reads of the year!
Liezel: If you are into dark romances then yes I would recommend it. Dark Notes is definitely the best teacher/student romance that I’ve read to date.
