I decided that it was high time that I stepped back a quick minute from all the intensity of adult romance and try a YA romance for a change. What better way to stave off the craving than a book written by one amazing author – Abbi Glines.
“The Vincent Boys” revolves around three childhood friends Ashton, Beau and Sawyer. Growing up together in small-town Alabama they were all inseparable. Things, however, change once the three hit their teenage years. Both of the boys start to feel different towards their now attractive and beautiful friend Ashton. Much to Beau’s disappointed it was Sawyer that makes the first move. Besides the fact that Beau felt unworthy of Ashton, he loves his cousin Sawyer like a brother and willingly steps aside.
Three years in, everyone assumes that Sawyer and Ashton’s relationship is impenetrable yet once Sawyer leaves town Ashton finds herself gravitating towards Beau. We then find out that even though Sawyer is the all around perfect guy for Ashton she feels dissatisfied. Being back in Beau’s presence she comes to realize that it is with him that she feels most content and feels her happiest.
I asked myself while reading this book was “When is cheating ever okay?” In my opinion it never is and at first I began to dislike the entire story. I remembered though what the book concept was about and when I lowered my overall perception, realizing that this was YA then I wasn’t as disconcerted.
So, what did I think about the characters? Ashton, in particular, was frustratingly childish but when I thought more about it she was doing the best she could in her given situation. It doesn’t make cheating right but as the story flowed I began to understand where she was coming from. In a way, I couldn’t be that disappointed in her since she was trying to live up to everybody else expectations foregoing her own happiness.
Beau was basically in the same boat but in his case he does something admirable. As much as he loved Ashton he does what he thought was best which was letting her go. I thought that Beau was commendable because of this and also for being able to hold off as long as he did considering just how deep his feelings were for Ashton. On the other hand, I didn’t really care for Sawyer but I’m hoping that my perception will change once I read the next book.
What I loved most about the book was the fantastic representation of small town, southern setting – the close ties, the intricate family dynamics, the simply living and even the nosy – gossipy neighbors rang so true. It felt like I was a firsthand witness in the story.
I honestly did have my doubts on how the author was going to pull off this love triangle but in the end I was stressing for nothing because this one was decently done. I loved that after all the heartache and pain between all the characters that they found the perfect resolution.
I enjoyed the first book in the series. What will definitely keep me coming back for more is not only satisfying my curiosity on how Sawyer gets his HEA but also how the relationship between these three characters will evolve.
