“She’s beauty for my ashes. And I’m hope for her heartache.”—Cole Danzer.
I don’t know what makes a great love story. Is it that instant attraction when boy meets girl? The passionate kisses and the fairy-tale ending? Or is it a lifetime of tragedy, paid in advance, for a few stolen moments of pure bliss? The pain and the suffering that, in the end, you can say are worth it for having found the missing piece of your soul?
The answer is: I don’t know. I don’t know what makes a great love story. I only know what makes my love story. I only know that finding Cole when I did, when Emmy and I were running from a nightmare, was the only thing that saved me. That saved us. He was more broken than I was, but somehow we took each other’s shattered pieces and made a whole. If that is what makes a great love story, if that is what makes an epic romance, then mine…ours is the greatest of them all.
Liezel’s Thoughts:
Good grief, that was one helluva roller coaster ride! “Pocketful Of Sand” built me up, broke me down, shook me to my very core and brought me right back up again. It was one crazy ride….but you know what? I wouldn’t change a thing about it. Every single moment for me was absolutely fantastic!
“Pocketful Of Sand” is about a young woman who was on the run. Eden consistently had to move to maintain her and her daughter Emmy’s anonymity. She never put roots down nor had the desire to up until they moved near the beach in Maine.
It only took one glimpse from Cole Danzer and Eden immediately knew that this is where she was fated to be. Eden and Emmy belonged on that very beach along side this very man. Cole felt exactly the same way but he wasn’t capable of accepting this destined second chance. He was too blinded by this tremendous guilt and was committed to doing the penance for his fatal mistake.
“I don’t have anything to give you, Eden. I’m broken. More than I thought I could be. But you can have what’s left of me. If you want it. You can have what little I have to give.”
I would have to say that this is one of the many reasons why I loved this book – the characters and how their emotions were portrayed was simply magnificent. The remorse that Cole felt truly emanated over the pages. I couldn’t help but feel broken-hearted for all that he was going through. Even when the opportunity presented itself, he was resistant for he believed that he didn’t deserve love or happiness. He was such a tortured soul.
Same is true for Eden. I can not even imagine the torment she felt looking in her daughter’s eyes day in and day out. Despite experiencing so much pain and agony she still had this immense love and devotion for her child. She would have sacrificed anything including her life for her daughter. I thought the pairing between the couple was brilliant. In all sense -they fit perfectly.
Another thing I loved about this book was how innovative it was. Given the technology nowadays it is likely that this has been done before but for me this was the first time in my reading history where I was able to choose how I wanted the story to end. I thought that this feature was amazing. It gave me this sense of importance. Where my opinion actually mattered in my overall appreciation of the story.
In the end, it didn’t matter what I had chosen. I knew for a fact that I would have enjoyed the story in all its entirety either way. That is just how outstanding it was for me.
