Liezel’s Thoughts:
Finishing this story off last night, it made me realize just how invaluable being a blogger is. I am given this great opportunity to read such a wide range of books that I would have otherwise been left undiscovered. That being said, I can not stress how grateful I am to Inger Iversen for opening my eyes to this great sub-genre.
“Incarcerated” is about this unlikely couple Katie Andreassen and Logan Whyte. I describe them “unlikely” because it if wasn’t for the unpleasant circumstances that Logan was in these two would have never met. Given their unusual meeting I would have to say that fate certainly had a hand in it.
The hero of the story, Logan is in jail. He was imprisoned for a crime that he hardly committed. He’s been in for years and because of his good behavior he is allowed to participate in the new Pen Pal Program founded by the warden’s daughter, Katie. Being the sheltered daughter that she was, her name shouldn’t have been included in the program but her good friend Teal who works in the office submitted her name as she requested.
At first I couldn’t understand why such a beautiful and successful woman would want to a part of this. Come to find out that despite her career she is quite shy and introverted. She does have close friends but even with she senses that something is still lacking. She thought that this program would be a good way to find that something that she is missing. And while she wasn’t originally looking for a partner – everything between her and Logan fell naturally into that category.
The relationship they started had always been effortless but when Logan unknowingly mentions having an extreme dislike towards Katie’s race this is where their problems begin. After all that time that they’ve been communicating he didn’t realize she wasn’t of his same race. Given these feelings he had for her it shouldn’t have been an issue but when one has experienced so much violence in the past he can not help but have second thoughts.
“When I got your picture, I realized the color of your skin didn’t matter. When I looked at it, I was angry with myself for the things I’d said to you because I’d promised when I found the woman I wanted to make a life with, I’d never hurt her.”
All of that didn’t matter though. Their love was so profound that they were able to look beyond their past, their differences and beat all the odds that were against them – together. This is just one of the many reasons why I enjoyed this book.
What I also thought was commendable was the fact that our hero wasn’t in any way perfect. He however was willing to change and do just about everything to become worthy of Katie’s love. For me, there isn’t a better way to show how important someone is than making such a commitment.
This past weekend I was looking for something different from my usual read. I definitely found it in “Incarcerated”. Besides a great romance it delivered a worthy story that addressed controversial social issues that I have never come across in the books I’ve read so far.
I thought the entire story was overall interesting. If you are a romance reader looking for something unique then “Incarcerated” is definitely worth looking into.
