Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s sensual and painfully beautiful Guild Hunter world in her new novel of sacrifice, loyalty, and the choices of love that can shatter the heart.
In the wake of a brutal war, the archangel Raphael and his hunter consort, Elena, are dealing with the treacherously shifting tides of archangelic politics and the people of a battered but not broken city. The last thing their city needs is more death, especially a death that bears the eerie signature of an insane enemy archangel who cannot— should not—be walking the streets.
This hunt must be undertaken with stealth and without alerting their people. It must be handled by those who can become shadows themselves…
Ash is a gifted tracker and a woman cursed with the ability to sense the secrets of anyone she touches. But there’s one man she knows all too well without a single instant of skin contact: Janvier, the dangerously sexy Cajun vampire who has fascinated and infuriated her for years. Now, as they track down a merciless killer, their cat-and-mouse game of flirtation and provocation has turned into a profound one of the heart. And this time, it is Ash’s secret, dark and terrible, that threatens to destroy them both.
Liezel’s Thoughts:
There truly is no rest for the weary. Raphael and his seven are amidst a total reconstruction of New York when an unknown entity takes advantage of this vulnerable time to commit acts of violence. Not wanting the issue to get out of hand, guild leader -Sara sends Ashwini to investigate. Cajun charmer Janvier knew that Ash was just recuperating from a recent injury therefore he decides to tack himself to the case.
If you’ve read “Archangel’s Pawn” you know how intense Ashwini and Janvier history is. You see, hunter Ash was once out on a hunt where Janvier was the hunted. He put her through her paces in that swamp. He became that irresistible challenge and he in turn revered in the chase.
Needless to say Janvier became the ” one that got away”. Given the threat on New York Ash had to get over that disappointment immediately and they eventually became a team. A team that worked like a well-oiled machine.
Janvier wanted so much more than a working relationship even back then but Ashwini was resistant. Because of her gift and her family history she typically never lets anyone in. Janvier’s persistent nature however broke through all those walls and he became exactly what she needed.
When we find out her secrets they are pretty sobering and while most would be hesitant , Janvier remained by her side. There were so many risks being with her but he was willing to sacrifice it all just as long as he had her in his life no matter how short a period that might have been. That’s what I call dedication!
What I thought was amazing about this couple (besides how perfect they fit) was despite this all consuming ardor that they were both experiencing they always put their responsibilities first. Even if they weren’t part of that immediate circle their loyalty to the archangel and their city was astounding. In fact, every single person under Raphael was just as loyal and devoted. I would have to say that this was the best part…reading how each one of the characters proved just how deep the camaraderie and friendship was.
Just like the previous books in the series, I thought “Archangel’s Shadows” was very well written. The characters were engaging, the romance was good and the suspense was thrilling.Enjoyed this one and I for one can not wait to see where Nalini Singh takes Raphael and the Seven to next.
