Liezel’s Thoughts:
I love dark romances and this series has just been added to the list of such favorites. I do have to admit that after reading the first book in the series Debt Inheritance I originally didn’t feel that way. Besides the disappointing cliffhanger at the end, there was one particular scene that was so appalling it even shocked me to the point where I didn’t want to continue on. How do you explain a scene like that? Talk about pushing the boundaries!
It is all explained perfectly in First Debt. What it basically comes down to is the legacy brought on by Jethro and Nila’s ancestors. From an early on their lives have been set in stone. Driven by tradition they are to follow every notion set by their family. To survive in this dark world there is a certain role that Jethro is expected to play even if it’s against his basic instinct. He tries his best to do what is expected of him but Nila remains an endless challenge.
In other circumstances, one would bow down and wallow in defeat but Nila possesses so much strength I couldn’t help but admire her. Every time Jethro pushes – Nila shoved right back. This is just one trait that makes her truly exceptional.
“How can I live with the knowledge that I hate you, that you’re my future killer, yet I can’t stop my body from craving you?”
What I found so enticing about the series especially in this second installment is this “I love you, I hate you” relationship that they come to possess. Jethro and Nila together is dangerously complex and complicated yet so irrevocably delicious so much as it is incomparable to anything that I’ve read before.
As expected the writing was impeccable. Written in both POV’s, I thought the author did a spectacular job conveying each of the character’s emotion and the complicated conflict that they felt within.
There’s a reason why Pepper Winters is one of my favorite authors. She has this unique way of delivering dark romances like no other! If you enjoy such works in this sub-genre than this series is definitely one you should look out for.

A small gasp fell from my lips as his fingers kissed the paper-thin skin. His eyes held me hostage. The golden brown was now a swirling bronze, raging with the same demanding hunger I knew reflected in mine.
“This sort of reminds me of the forest,” I whispered. “The trees around us—no one else.” My words fell like petals, waiting for Jethro to crush them beneath his glossy shoe.
But…he didn’t.
Tracing one hand from my wrist, along the inside of my arm, and right to my throat, he fisted my ponytail. With intensity that stripped my soul to the very essence of who I was, he pulled my head back slowly, sensually, full of sexual power.
His eyes dropped to my mouth. “I’ll let you in on a little secret, Ms. Weaver.”
I panted, my neck straining against his hold, but I made no move to break the poignant awareness.
“You won that night, but I lied when I said it pissed me off.” His mouth dropped, his tongue licked my bottom lip with the barest of grazes.
