Liezel’s Thoughts:
Because of a busy family life, I don’t have as much reading time like I used to have yet as soon as I started You Loved Me At My Darkest … it immediately knocked me off my feet and I found myself reverting to old habits …reading all throughout the night. What a helluva riveting story!
With their parents gone, Australian sisters, Lily and Sasha have been running the family business incessantly. Needing a break, they decide that it was time to go on a much-needed vacation to the US. It should have been a normal time of rest and relaxation but as soon as they were spotted in an airport their lives no longer belonged to them.
They were once so happy and carefree then suddenly they are living in one’s worst nightmare. Together they are thrown into the world of slavery. Equally beautiful it is Lily’s spirit that makes her stand out and this is how she ends up belonging in this special collection of women that cater to the richest of men. Being such a high-priced commodity she ends up having a personal bodyguard – Jake.
Jake was taken by Lily from the very first day he saw her. As character development goes, I could immediately understand why. Lily possesses this innate beauty and radiance both externally and internally. At any given time she would have done anything to protect her sister. It didn’t matter how bad of a position she was put in – her sister’s safety was always her primary concern.
“My chest has burned since the first day I met you, Lil. The only time I get any rest from this ache is when you’re in my arms and I know you’re safe.”
Unknowingly, Lily is exactly like Jake. Her utter love and devotion was definitely what made Jake fall madly and deeply in love with his captive. However, it was when Jake confessed his deepest, darkest secrets that seemed to have solidified their soul-deep connection. This is what I loved most about this book…behind all the darkness and disparity, an unexpected yet convincing romance is revealed.
For a debut author I do have to hand it to author Evie Harper… how she was able to describe so many emotions across the spectrum was mind-boggling. You can literally feel how Lily’s pain and heartache is, how torn Jake was between his mission and his heart and how much they were willing to give up to be save each other and be together.
I immensely enjoyed this one and I am definitely excited that Book 2: You Loved Me At My Weakest is to be released in a few weeks.
