Sometimes all you need is Patience.
Life’s been hard for Zeke. Being a punching bag for his alcoholic father has turned him into stone. Not even the dodgy trailer park he lives in can scare him. Fighting is his release and sex, drugs, and his guitar bring him peace, but deep down Zeke isn’t quite as hard as he makes himself out to be. When he meets Patience, she finds all his broken pieces and puts him back together, but she’s a ray of light in his shadowed life and the last thing he wants to do is bring her into his dark world. Playing careless is easy, playing the bad guy can be fun, but playing Patience is impossible, especially when she can see right through him.
Zeke isn’t the only one who’s broken, and for the first time, in a long time, Patience feels alive. Her black and white world gets a shot of color when she meets Zeke. He’s unlike anyone she’s ever met with his tattoos, piercings, and blunt honesty. She wants nothing more than to let go and ride the wild side with him, but some wounds never heal and the broken pieces of Patience aren’t so easy to find.
Liezel’s Thoughts:
At first glance you would never think that Zeke and Patience would not have a thing in common. They grew up on the total opposites of the spectrum. Patience resides with her affluent family in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods while Zeke lived in a bad part of town in a trailer park with an alcoholic father. What you don’t expect is, despite their contrasting upbringings they are very much alike. Everyday they silently suffered in misery and fear due to the abuse by the mere people who should be protecting them.
From the very first chapters I felt horrified for what they both had to endured separately through all those years. Reading their individual experiences ripped me apart in two. For me it was extremely gut-wrenching. At times I even thought that this story would never work out and become entertaining. Just the thought of any form of abuse most especially sexual is a big “NO-NO” for me but when I continued on reading their story it became so much more than that.
“Zeke and I were both broken parts of a whole person and not matter what piece you put where, it would fit, because we fit. I’d always known it. We fit.”
All the pain that they experienced separately became something wonderful when they opened themselves to one another. Sure it may have started as just a physical attraction between Patience and Zeke but as they got to know each other better their souls called out to one another.
What they had was a thing of beauty. Patience became the one thing that centered Zeke and in many ways saved him from a life of destruction and in return Zeke became one of the major reasons Patience continued on after loosing that one person that truly loved and cared for her.
I enjoyed this book. It may have had some distressing and hurtful moments but in the end every single one of those scenes made the book even that more striking.
