He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.
He speaks Spanish. I speak English.
He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.
He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.
He’s married and has a five-year old daughter. I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.
Until now.Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the f*#king truth.

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.
Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Latino charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.
Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.
Something that can never, ever be.
Or so she thinks.
Liezel’s Thoughts:
Vera is an independent college student that takes an unforgettable backpacking trip to Europe during her summer break. Towards the end of her trip she heads to Madrid to commune with Spaniard business men and women to further enhance their conversational English. She was out to explore the beautiful country, meet new people and experience new things. What she never expected was to fall out of character and fall irrevocably in love.
The entire situation would have been perfect but the major issue was Mateo- the men she falls in love with is already married. She tries to ignore these feelings for she knew that it would only lead to heartache but with every unavoidable encounter their bond further strengthens and grows. In desperation, she does the unimaginable thinking that Mateo would avoid her forever but instead her plan backfires and they gravitate even closer together.
“You are my universe and I have nothing if I don’t have you in my life. Please, Vera. I love you like I love the stars, like I love the sky, like I love the earth. I can’t do this without you. I can’t.”
We continuously witness Vera’s attempt to abide by her deep-seated convictions. She knows this man was fated to be hers but she is determined to follow her own principles to never become the other woman. Her emotional turmoil is deep and heartfelt and is conveyed in such a genuine manner and while I personally think that there is never a good excuse for infidelity you can’t help but begin to sympathize with Vera.
I’ve always approached stories that involve infidelity with so much skepticism and Love, In English was not any different. As I was followed Vera and Mateo’s story it felt like a veil was uncovered from my eyes. Despite the impossible position that they were put in, what they shared was a thing of beauty and I applaud Karina Halle for conceptualizing such an amazing story. It definitely made me come to realize that no matter how wrong or taboo the subject matter is, if written properly it too can be created into something exceptional.
