“Our baby died on prom night, and nothing was ever the same again.”

Corabelle doesn’t feel like any of the other college girls. On what should have been one of the happiest nights of her life, she and her boyfriend Gavin watched a nurse disconnect the ventilator from their seven-day-old baby. During the funeral two days later, Gavin walked out and never returned.

Since then, her life has been a spiral of disasters. The only thing that has helped is her ability to black out whenever the pain gets too hard to bear, a habit that has become an addiction.

When Gavin shows up in her astronomy class four years later, he is hell-bent on getting her back, insisting she forgive him. Corabelle knows she can’t resist the touch that fills the empty ache that has haunted her since he left. But if he learns what she has done, if he follows the trail back through her past, her secrets will destroy their love completely. And once again, she’ll lose the only person who always believed she was innocent.

Liezel’s Thoughts:

As kids,  Corabella and Gavin always knew that they were meant for each other.  They were inseparable growing up and as they matured their relationship flourished. They were soul mates but because of the heartbreaking loss of their child, their relationship crumbled. Gavin could not handle it and left Corabella to grieve on her own.

She tries to move on in life, tried to forget him and she’s almost to that point up until fate steps in and brings them back together. She tries to avoid him but she can not control what her heart dictates. She yearns for him and does not want to let him go again. She needs him as much as he needs her. She knows that if he ever left her again she would not be able to handle another heartbreak.

Gavin tries to honor her wishes but after finding her, he simply can not give up the love of his life again. He tries to convince her and assures her repeatedly that nothing will come between them. When they finally decide to give what they have another shot and renew their promises, painful secrets come to light. Secrets that again test their love, commitment, and devotion for each other.

I have, to be honest and say that I have mixed feeling too about this book. The writing was great but the story, in general, was agonizing.  I read to be entertained and this story was heartbreaking and extremely painful to read. A week later and I still feel depressed about it which I was not expecting. This is one of those books that I just want to tuck in my subconscious and try to forget.

I thought the story and the character building was satisfactory. Corabella and Gavin made a great pair physically but emotionally I don’t know if they’ll ever be able to get pass what was said and done.   The story does contain a cliffhanger that I’m still undecided about reading.  They’ve already been through so much and although I do want to know how the couple ends up I don’t think I can handle any more of their distress. If anything I think it will take a lot of convincing for me to even accept them getting through it all.

I did think that the writing was smooth and the way the author was able to convey the raw feelings of love, grief,  guilt and blame in those difficult situations was remarkable. It was very moving and well described that as a mother I couldn’t help feel the empathy for the main characters. I can not imagine how much it took for the author to write these emotions and I admire her for being able to do so.

If you are looking for a story about young love, loss and second chances that are more on the sensitive side then I think Forever Innocent is a likely choice for you.
