What happens when you create rules to keep others out?
One thing Emerson Moore has come to terms with is that she is the school slut. She knows her way around a frat house and how to get what she wants. She doesn’t make any excuses for her actions and she doesn’t pretend to be anything different. She is who she is and with that she knows how to have a good time. She’s made rules to keep relationships at bay and avoid the demons of her past.
When her best friend, Cole has his two friends from back home move in with him she begins to think she has met her match with Jaxon Riley. Jax is the perfect mixture of tattooed muscle and a sweet-talking mouth. With “hand” written notes, a voice that exudes sex and knowing just how to get under her skin, Jaxon learns how to break all the rules. But will he just end up breaking her heart anyway?
Liezel’s Thoughts:
Men sleep around all the time and are rarely judged for it but when a woman does it – it’s a whole different story . So true in the case of Emerson who is labeled the school slut. She made up these crazy rules do avoid intimacy. Every sexual relationship she’s involved in basically had an expiration date. Three times is all it takes and your time is up.
It takes a new transfer – Jax Riley, for her to even consider breaking these rules. He isn’t the relationship type either but for her he is willing to try. She resists time and time again but Jax is just that persistent. She finally agrees into trying this so-called relationship but Em just can’t keep it together. She’s constantly running. Finally when she is fully vested it takes one bad decision and Jax decides he’s done. He’s done with her shutting him out and ends it.
Heartbroken, Em tries to move on but she just can’t get over him. She throws herself into her school activities and appears to be functional but deep down she remains shattered. Eventually the truth about her past comes to light and everything that she believed in just one huge misunderstanding.
Jax remains stuck on Emerson too. With the undeniable love and attraction between them will they ever be able to get over their hang ups and try again? Or are they just going to finally end it all and let go of something that could be potentially perfect.
“You are my heart. You don’t walk away from your heart.”
From the very beginning this story enraptured me. My inquisitive nature wanted to know why she is the way she is? What made her decide that relationships weren’t worth a damn? I honestly was reluctant that the author wouldn’t be able to convince me but surprisingly she did.
It was really difficult to accept Em in the beginning but finding out more as the story moves along made me sympathize with what she was going through. After all that drama, I was glad she didn’t wallow in self pity and revert back to her old ways. Instead she seemed to become responsible and more mature.
Jaxon’s character? Oh gosh, where do I even begin… loved him! Athletic, attractive, responsible, caring and loving. Passionate. Swoon-worthy. My list goes on and on. The chemistry between the two is ridiculous. Some may say that it was corny and cheesy but I found his simple gestures endearing. I also appreciated the relationship he had with friends and family and I liked that he was able to share that with Emerson.
Bottom line is, I thought the story was smooth and well delivered , impressive for a debut author. To me, she sure did capture the true essence of a New Adult romance and I really am hoping that there is more to this story.
