On the rink she’s tough, she’s a leader, she’s fast and she’s the epitome of a rebellious girl.  But Nellie’s been hurt, only once, but it was enough to make her look at life through different eyes and off the rink she’s a timid girl who loves with no pretenses.

A long time ago Owen Black was betrayed by the girl he thought he loved and the guy he called his best friend.  The anguish set off a domino effect of negativity in his life and he never has fully recovered.  He meets Nellie Forrester and thinks he can let it go for her.

But how can you love someone when the wounds from your past are still wide open?

Liezel’s Thoughts:

“How could I ever have a life without you in it? No matter what happens in the future, it won’t be worth a thing without you….”

Seeing the beautiful, tattooed , blue-haired Nellie for the first time in class,  Owen knew  that he was in trouble. He wanted to  know everything there was to know about her especially why  her hair was colored Smurfette-blue.

Their paths crossed multiple times across campus but it was days before they actually met up with each other. He was hesitant and so was she. They both had been in previous relationships that ended up with  lies and deceit. While most could get over a broken heart and move on Nellie was trying to do so too but Nellie’s mother constantly waved her failed relationship in her face.  Owen too had issues getting over his past relationship, he was consumed by darkness and self doubt which led him into adopting a wild lifestyle. Because of this he thought he didn’t deserve someone like Nellie.

As both their room mates started dating each other they too started  spending  more time together and their relationship blossoms. And everything seemed perfect.

Being in college their lives simply got busier and their time together just didn’t seem enough. Owen starts to doubt Nellie when she begins seeing her chemistry partner more frequently. Will Owen be able to let go of his past? Will he ever realize that Nellie is just as committed to this relationship as he is? Or will he let the idea of his past  destroy the beautiful relationship that they’ve  built?

——————————

I truly enjoyed this New Adult story, it dealt with real life issues that could happen to anyone starting out in a new relationship and I couldn’t help  identifying with each character.

I like Nellie and how she was one kickass woman in the rink but outside she was soft and gentle. I loved that even if she never had her parents support in any decisions that she made she never faltered or whined about it. She just simply accepting things as they were and lived her life.

I also loved Owen and how patient and honorable he was with Nellie. His family was simply perfect and I loved how involved  and supportive they all were in their relationship. Nellie had an absentee family and Owen’s just adopted her into theirs even when…who wouldn’t be envious about something like that?

I enjoyed the buildup of their friendship and finally into a relationship. While Owen had his faults and the distance in the end was heartbreaking , I thought that it was necessary for both of them to grow and realize that what they had was real and true.

If you are looking for a wholesome, heart warming read than this one is for you. I for one am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

The Verdict:

About Lila Felix

I am a stay at home mom from the South and wife to the most giving and hard working husband ever. I love to cook and try out new recipes even if they don’t always turn out like I want them to. I refer to my kids lovingly as the Three Stooges as they are constantly coming up with new ways to reek havoc in the house. Most recently that included putting a rubberband on the kitchen sink sprayer so it would douse me when I did the dishes. I love to go to roller derby bouts and read in my spare time. I write mostly at night when the house is silent and I can sneak cookies without having to share! If you’re into stalking, try under the Cypress trees in the swamps of Louisiana, but watch out for gators!!
